Despite the remarkable benefits of Igusa, the industry in Japan has been in sharp decline in recent years. Today, Japan’s Igusa production has dropped to less than one-tenth of what it used to be. In Kumamoto Prefecture, which produces over 90% of Japan’s Igusa, the number of farmers has decreased by an astonishing 95% over the past 40 years. According to the Kumamoto Igusa Production and Sales Promotion Association, demand for tatami mats has plummeted from 45 million pieces in 1993 to just 14.9 million in 2012. Through this project, by using igusa in this innovative way, the industry is supported while showing off the wonders of igusa to people worldwide!
